At an event in New York last week, Norwegian Cruise Lines released details on the innovative entertainment line up passengers can expect on Norwegian Breakaway when she launches in the Big Apple in May 2013.
The five-time Tony Award nominated musical “Rock of Ages” will head the line up that also includes Broadway shows “Burn the Floor” and “Cirque Dreams & Dinner Jungle Fantasy”.
“As a lifelong New Yorker, it’s critically important to me that Norwegian Breakaway becomes New York’s ship – the only way to cruise from New York when she arrives next May,” Norwegian Cruises Lines CEO Kevin Sheehan said.
“Our goal is to bring elements of New York onboard so that guests will feel a real connection to the ship as New York’s true flagship…we are truly bringing Broadway to the high seas and delivering the high calibre entertainment that New Yorkers have come to expect.”
One of the longest running shows in Broadway history and now a feature film starring Tom Cruise, “Rock of Ages” will appear in the 800-seat Breakaway Theatre and will showcase an array of musical numbers including, “I Wanna Know What Love Is”, Here I Go Again” and “Don’t Stop Believin”.
The ballroom dancing spectacular that premiered in London in 1999, will be seen in both the Breakaway Theatre and The Manhattan Room.
With performances of the Cha Cha, Salsa, Samba, Mambo, Tango, Paso Doble and more, “Burn the Floor” is currently in the midst of its world tour with dates in countries including South Africa, Australia, Singapore and Japan before returning to the U.S. and joining Norwegian Breakaway in 2013.
Producer and director Neil Goldberg will present an adaptation of the Broadway show on Norwegian Breakaway that features the best of “Cirque Dreams & Dinner” currently showing aboard Norwegian Epic and “Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy”.
Performing in the intimate Spiegel Tent, the show will feature an international cast of ‘Cirque Dreamers’ who will perform acrobatics and bring to life a ‘Ballet of Butterflies’, ‘Flipping Monkeys’ and ‘Fanciful Birds’.
New York’s Slam Allen will follow his popular performance as the house band on Norwegian Epic’s Jazz & Blues Club by taking the stage in Fat Cats Jazz & Blues Club aboard Norwegian Breakaway.
Joining Allen will be a host of other jazz musicians from around the world who will perform in the intimate venue that features a full bar, leather lounges and chairs as well as outdoor seating on The Waterfront.
Improvisational comedy ensemble The Second City will perform in the all-new Headliners Comedy Club that will debut on Norwegian Breakaway.
Popular aboard a host of Norwegian’s fleet, The Second City is famed for honing the skills of such renowned comedians as Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Bill Murray and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Customised comedy revues of satirical skits and improvisational pieces will include audience participation and will be performed in the venue that invokes a show lounge ambience with a small raised stage, concrete floors, brick walls and a full bar.
The rock n’ roll duelling piano show that proved popular aboard Norwegian Epic, will be seen at the Headliners Comedy Club aboard Norwegian Breakaway.
Featuring two baby grand pianos, the musicians involve guests in the show while playing music from 70s rock to hip-hop in each four hour set.
