The one where a ray of Sunshine was Destined for Carnival…

Carnival Cruise Lines has announced a USD$155 million revamp for Carnival Destiny so extreme that she will be reintroduced as Carnival Sunshine.

The most ambitious refurbishment ever for the cruise line, Carnival Sunshine will feature all of the new ‘Fun Ship 2.0’ initiatives along with a reconfigured layout, the addition of a partial deck, the expansion of two forward decks and 182 new cabins.

Taking place in February 2013, the 49-day dry dock will be run by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“This is our most ambitious ship conversion project to date and it will radically transform the Carnival Destiny into essentially an entirely new ship offering a variety of exciting dining and beverage choices, spectacular outdoor spaces and entertainment options, and onboard innovations not available anywhere else,” Carnival president and CEO Gerry Cahill said.

Enhanced dining venues include ‘Guy’s Burger Joint’, ‘BlueIguana Cantina’, ‘Fahrenheit 555’ and ‘Cucina del Capitano’ along with a new full-service Asian restaurant offering complimentary lunch to passengers and charging a nominal fee for dinner.

‘The Comfort Kitchen’, located within the ‘Lido Marketplace’ will offer an alternative casual dining option and the main dining rooms are set to be completely renovated during the extensive dry dock.

‘RedFrog Pub’ and the ‘RedFrog Bar’ will serve up Carnival’s own ‘ThirstyFrog Red’ private label draft beer while additional bar venues onboard will include ‘BlueIguana Tequila Bar’, ‘EA Sports Bar’, ‘Alchemy Bar’ and ‘The Library Bar’.

The all-new ‘Havana Bar’ nightclub, located aft within the ‘Lido Marketplace’, will imbue a tropical-feel and will offer panoramic ocean views from floor to ceiling windows along with live Latin music daily.

Live music will also be the main feature of the new ‘Sunshine Bar’, located on the lobby level of the atrium, while a new cigar bar will offer passengers a variety of brandies, cognacs and liqueurs.

Carnival Sunshine will also include the line’s first three-deck high ‘Serenity’ adult exclusive area complete with a spa, waterfall, pool and complimentary dining venue offering customisable fresh salads.

The all-new ‘SportSquare’ will feature a ropes course, mini-golf course, half basketball and volleyball court, jogging track, table tennis, foosball tables and a large flat-screen television while the ‘WaterWorks’ will offer passengers a new thrill slide along with the iconic ‘Twister’ waterslide and ‘Splash Zone’ for younger cruisers.

Entertainment options will include live performances by ‘Playlist Productions’, ‘Hasbro, The Game Show’, ‘Piano Bar 88’, ‘The Punchliner Comedy Club Presented by George Lopez’ and ‘The Punchliner Comedy Brunch’.

All staterooms will feature bright colours and soothing pastels as part of their tropical-theme with 96 of the 182 added, spa staterooms.

Carnival Sunshine will embark on a series of 18, nine and 12-day Mediterranean cruises following dry-dock commencing with a 14-day ‘maiden’ voyage departing Venice on 12 April 2013 and arriving in Barcelona on 26 April 2013.

The voyages will call into ports including Marseilles, Monte Carlo, Livorno (Pisa/Florence), Civitavecchia (Rome) and Dubrovnik.
